About me. Supposed to be simple, so I'll start in the beginning.
I was born and raised in a small town in Cambria county called Nicktown. It's only claim to fame is it's pizza, which is awesome! The population was a staggering 200 people, so yes, I was a farm boy.
I went to Northern Cambria for grade school and high school. I was one of the lucky people who got to stay in just one school my entire childhood. A lot of kids today are forced to switch schools because their parents need to move for work. I definately am grateful that I was granted this luxury.
After high school, I went to IUP. The drive back and forth every day from Nicktown was not something I looked forward to. College was definately not for me at this time. So after my first year, I dropped out. I did the normal summer job thing doing whatever work someone would pay me to do. College was something I may or may not go back to, and was undecided really. I ended up working for a construction company out of Indiana, and most of the jobs were in the Indiana area. By this time, my cousins who were a big part of my life, moved to Indiana to go to college. One of their roomates had to leave, so they were looking for someone to fill that spot. To the dismay of my mom, I moved to Indiana.
Working and living in Indiana was unlike anything I have experienced up until this time. Coming from such a small town, I was amazed athow lively things were. I was working several different jobs ranging from auto sales, to golf course cart driver (no clue what that's really called), busboy, shelf stocker (no idea here either)...and found myself wanting a bit more out of life. So, I went back to IUP with a purpose. I was going to get a great job! It was going to be awesome! K.. what the heck do I want to do? Long story short.. I enjoyed the life here at IUP tremendously! Along the way.. I switched majors 6 times. Seemingly there wasn't any job that really excited me.
My whole life, I'd been curious about how things work. My mom hated it! I'd be taking apart appliances and shocking myself, cutting myself, burning myself, shorting out things.. blowing breakers... ahh the good ol days! Problem being.. how do I make money at it.
Throughout my childhood, I was lucky enough to have not 1, but 2 aunts who had computers. It was the greatest thing going there and playing Oregon Trail, pacman, tetris, frogger. I looked forward to that as much as anything else. I had such fun, that I begain to wonder how these things worked. What made the little things on the screen move?
Back to IUP. I had the opportunity to work at Johnson Data Center, and took it. I found that I enjoyed figuring out people's problems. It wasn't so much that I enjoyed helping them (minus points I'm sure), but it was the fact that I was figuring out things and bettering myself and was enjoying it. Good times! During this time, I also was on the IUP track team. I threw javelin. I loved to do that. It was such a stress reliever! I was ok, but not great at it. But I had hella-fun doing it! When I dropped out of IUP the final time, I missed that the most.
So yes, I dropped out. I was getting a bunch of credits, but still wasn't happy with the career paths they offered. I really liked the messing around and tinkering, but when someone paid me to do it, it lost it's appeal. I did work on the side, and enjoyed the people. But it didn't feel right. So an opportunity came along to work for an Internet company called Citipage. I took it, and found that what I most wanted to do in life, was help people and get along with the people I worked with. It's very difficult to move forward when you're surrounded with negativity. Once you find that right place, you stick with it.
So when Citipage was sold, (so much drama), I went to work for another ISP. That lasted awhile... until I got a call from Citipage again. From the same person who hired me the last time. Well, I was convinced.. and agreed right there to go back. I got the opportunity to work with a group of amazing web developers. I moved to Johnstown. We did a lot of high-profile web work. I still have contact with over half of those companies, and it's been 10 years since then!
So, Citipage was going bankrupt(joy, more drama)... Not willing to give up without a fight. In 1999, I incorporated Digital Razor, Inc. I was going to be prepared. Or so I thought. We happened to know another ISP in town and the person who ran it fairly well. A very trustworthy guy. We went to him, and he made an offer to purchase the customers so they would not be without service. And I went along as the web division on a subcontracted basis. That soon changed, as the new ISP needed a sysadmin... which I haven't really had much experience with.. but was always interesting. I got to figure out how to make web pages come up on people's screen magically. It was a good gig. I enjoyed my work, had free reign to break and fix servers (hypothetically of course).
Then the owner of the ISP died. No plans were in place how to handle that... bad bad story. If you ask I may tell that. Probably not though.
Remember Digital Razor? This is where things get really interesting. More to come...
